whenever i think about glastonbury i think about radiohead and kate moss – two of my favorite things and not even for very different reasons. what i don’t think about is neil diamond, but i guess he played there over the weekend. what i found funniest about this is that a few weeks ago at the rehearsal dinner for the truth’s wedding a few of us re-wrote sweet caroline and dj ru performed it for everyone at the dinner. this isn’t funny because i have watched dj ru speak awkwardly* in public throughout junior high, high school, college and everything after, but rather it’s funny because old neil seems to have ad-libbed the lyrics as much as dj ru did at the rehearsal dinner, though not nearly as well. furthermore, while i expect ru would stutter like james or john if asked to stand up and simply say his name in front of the glastonbury crowd, i would not be surprised if he could perform sweet caroline perfectly with just some slight help from his friend the captain (not stabbin’). i think neil hit about fifty percent of the words, before drifting into paul mccartney syndrome, getting caught up in the moment and generally leaving people scratching their heads as to what they just saw. if glastonbury gets dion and the belmonts for next year i think i’ll go.
*unless performing sweet caroline, which he does perfectly, ru tends to move his hand like a rapper while speaking in public which strikes much of his audience oddly as if to suggest he might eventually ask them to wave their hands in the air, obviously like they just don’t care.
