in catching up on the weeks television tonight i came across a wonder years episode that is one of my favorite episodes of any television show i’ve ever seen (ranking only slightly lower than the friends episodes ‘the one where ross finds out’ and ‘the one with the prom tape’). it was the one where kevin is making out with becky slater until he finds out that winnie (who was dating the dreamy, and not only in name, kirk mccray) only likes kirk – as opposed to likes him likes him. (the double likes him being similar to the space and difference between girl friend and girlfriend) still in love with winnie, kevin makes the bone-headed decision to break up with becky (who put out much more than winnie ever did and was more attractive and fun) so that he can enjoy awkward silences with winnie again. when he approaches becky to break up with her the narrator (old kevin) talks about not wanting to hurt poor becky and how bad he feels for what he is doing. as kevin opens his mouth to tell becky that they are breaking up without hesitating she turns and punches him twice in the stomach and once in the face knocking him out. what a girl!
the funny thing is i can still remember watching the episode in the bedroom i grew up in eating cool ranch doritos and to this day still feel bad for becky slater and cringe at kevin’s stupidity. it’s funny the things one remembers from childhood.
